Contact seller, or just leave neg?

On the way to leaving an Other Than Positive fb, buyer is presented with a dialog box with three questions.

The purpose of this box is to dissuade the "hasty newbie neg". It has been observed that newbie buyers are far more likely to leave negs for issues which will sort themselves out with a little patience. In fact, many such negs involve normal ebay flow of events. The dialog box seeks to slow down such a buyer.

In practice, it has been fairly effective in achieving that goal, but with some minor side-effects counter to the intent.

One such side effects is that some buyers interpret the dialog box as a radio button, push the most appropriate choice. They find themselves blocked from leaving neg, and misinterpret that as being for some nefarious reason involving protecting bad sellers.

The other side effect is that some buyers feel guilty for leaving OTP without contacting seller. There are a variety of cases where contacting seller is just not indicated before leaving neg. One might be a shipping gouge. Another might be a statement by seller that seller is not intending to honor the transaction described by the listing.

When buyer is dissatisfied with seller's performance, buyer runs a mental equation.

If it comes up "contact", fine. If not, that's fine too.

The equation has several factors.
One biggie summary: is this likely to be a pleasant human interaction?
1. did seller invite contact?
2. does this look like a possible mistake?

The second biggie, money.
1. How much money would I legitimately collect from seller to fix ths?

The third biggie, hassle.
1. Is seller likely to demand a return?

Add all those up, as buyer sees fit.
If they say "contact", then contact.
If they say "no contact", then leave appropriate fb and move on.

A record of extortion cases where neg was removed

1. case by jegroves. Buyer had a pattern 30 long of claiming SNAD, demanding partial refund, leaving neg if refund not forthcoming. (early 2009)

2. case involving buyer who did not claim SNAD, but rather negged over some communication insult. Demanded money to revise the neg. (mid 2009)

3. case by timeshadow. Buyer claimed SNAD, demanded $50, posted neg when it wasn't forthcoming. Buyer had a long list of complaints.

4. case where the usual neg sequence was followed up by buyer going into full harassment mode, taunting seller about the neg (Sept 09)

1st UPI strike removal and feedback rights

Some posters are willing to accuse ebay of seriously silly stuff. One example is the accusation, from time to time, that
Ebay usually removes the 1st UPI strike simply because bidder asks. This pretty well eliminates any protection ebay gives sellers from bad fb left by NPBs, since all they have to do is ask, and the neg will return.

Understand that if:
1. bidder doesn't pay
2. seller files a UPI dispute
3. seller closes the dispute with bidder getting a UPI strike

in such cases, seller is protected against negative fb. Not as cleanly as we would like, the NPB can usually post neg, but it will be removed.

It's also the case that Ebay does usually remove the 1st UPI strike, as a goodwill gesture. Bidder has been scolded. This presumably works to reform some percentage of NPBs, although Ebay does not publish any statistics.

However, the belief that Ebay would be screwy enough to all a gesture of goodwill toward a bidder to turn into harassment of a seller is a common enough belief that someone even asked Griff. Here's Griff's answer

Are the 'freebie' strike removals considered a successful appeal?

At a technical level, yes. When the strike is removed, the ability to leave FB will be restored. However, from a Feedback perspective, no. We will not allow NFB to remain unless there was a legitimate reason for the unpaid item (item was out of stock, seller changed the terms of the sale, etc.). Customer Support will continue to manually remove these when necessary.
